I just read this tip on Tipnut.com about growing 100lbs of potatoes in just 4 square feet of ground space. I must admit, I feel rather silly about not coming to this conclusion sooner. Don't get me wrong, I knew about the upwards growing of potatoes but had turned down the chance as I refuse to use tires in my garden. They're made for cars and roads, not for food. I just don't trust that they won't be toxic to our food. I hadn't thought of wooden boxes, mostly because we just don't have the money to go buying wood. I love one of the commentors stating "You need not buy lumber. There are plenty of used wooden pallets that are free for the taking."... hahaha not in NZ mate! Well, I don't know anywhere you can get them or wood free but if you do... please let me know :)
I'm wondering if this will stop the potatoes leeking out the sides and growing anywhere else they please. I have them running rampant in a corner of my garden already and just want to contain them (plus growing up would give us tuns more - yipeeee!). I thought of diggin a trench and putting corrugated iron down under the surface to contain them, now I'll have to consider this or combine the 2 plans - gee I love potatoes, don't you? :D

In our last house the garden was slopping, to make flat beds for our veg patch I went to the building recycling yard. They had heaps of wood. It wasn't free but it was cheap!
You can get pallets down at RD1 on the main road...
